Blower Door Testing

I have been providing blower door tests since 2017. I blower door test houses for builders and owners prior to plaster installation to identify any weakness in the airtight layers. I test the completed project to ensure airtightness to the required level. To the Passivhaus requirements or to meet the NCC requirements as specified for the project.

Airtight Detailing

I install airtight and wind tight layers for projects. At the project's inception, I collaborate with both the designer and builder to coordinate the necessary sequences for layer installation. I offer comprehensive installation services for projects or collaborate with builders to install the layers, providing hands-on, on-site training.

Meet Allan

Director

Allan Hocking

Hi, I’m Allan Hocking. I began my career in Ballarat in 1980 as a carpenter and joiner, completing my apprenticeship while studying Building Construction 1–3, with training in drafting, building regulations, and construction methods.

In 1990, I founded Hocking Homes, focusing on new homes, renovations, and bespoke joinery. My first energy-efficient home came in 1992—well ahead of the curve. Clients immediately noticed the difference, often remarking it was the most comfortable home they’d ever lived in. That feedback sparked a lasting commitment: to design and build homes that are not only comfortable but healthy and inherently high-performing.

Over the years, I explored and applied various energy-efficiency standards, continually striving to improve. But I also recognised their limitations. That changed when I attended a Green Living conference held by the Master Builders Association of Victoria. There, I was introduced to the Passivhaus concept. Instantly, it all clicked—this was the holistic, rigorous approach I had been searching for.

In 2015, I completed the Passivhaus Tradesperson course and invested in the specialised equipment and training required to conduct Blower Door Testing.

Put basically, the Passive House standard effectively separates the internal environment from the external environment, regardless of how extreme the external conditions may be.

The requirements necessary to achieve the Passive House standard are determined through calculations specific to the project's location. The requirements are precise and detailed, avoiding any generalizations based on assumptions.
