WHAT MAKES A PASSIVHAUS?

Windows

Passive Houses use double and triple-glazed, well-sealed windows and doors with insulated frames. These prevent heat loss and solar gain, reduce noise, and maintain comfort. Special coatings like Low-E glass enhance performance while allowing natural light in.

Thermal Insulation

High levels of uninterrupted insulation are essential. Walls, floors, and roofs must form a complete thermal envelope with no gaps. This helps maintain comfortable indoor temperatures year-round while drastically cutting heating and cooling demands.

Ventilation

Airtight homes require fresh air — that's where MHRV systems come in. They provide a constant supply of filtered air while recovering heat from outgoing air, boosting energy-efficiency and improving air quality and humidity control.

Thermal Bridging

Thermal bridges are weak spots where heat escapes. Passive House design eliminates or minimizes these through careful detailing and materials. This ensures consistent insulation, reduces condensation risk, and improves energy performance.

Airtightness

A Passive House must be extremely airtight to prevent unwanted air leakage. This ensures insulation performs properly, reduces drafts, and stops moisture buildup that can lead to condensation or mould. Airtightness is measured with a Blower Door Test and must meet strict limits to achieve certification.
